Portrait of a Woman from Indonesia
Indonesia is the most populous Muslim-majority country in the world.
The majority of Indonesians descend from Austronesian peoples originating from Taiwan; the other major group is Melanesian, found predominantly in eastern Indonesia.
Indonesia is home to approximately 400 distinct ethnic groups and 742 different languages and dialects.
The primary language is Javanese, which is also the dominant language politically and culturally.
Other non-Javanese groups include the Sundanese, Malays, and Madurese.

Portrait of Usuman, Chad
Across the borders of Chad, Niger, and Mali, the nomadic Peulh, Bororo, and Wodabee tribes still migrate with their herds today, seeking fertile pastures rich in salt—an essential substance for the animals’ well-being.
Every year in September, at the end of the rainy season and following months of transhumance, the Bororo clans of Chad return to their ancestral lands; young men of marriageable age take advantage of this gathering to find a wife.
The courtship period becomes a grand collective celebration known as the *Gerewol*, during which the young men stage a sort of beauty contest; the clan’s young women then choose the most handsome among them and ask for his hand in marriage.
It is undoubtedly one of the most evocative traditional events in the Sahelian and Saharan regions of Africa.
