Portrait of a Man from India

There are four main ethnic groups in India: the Indo-Aryan group, found in the central and northern parts of the country; the Dravidian group, widespread in the south and the archipelagos; the Tibeto-Burman group, present in the mountainous Himalayan regions; and the Austroasiatic group, a smaller group divided into small communities primarily in the Bay of Bengal region. In addition to these four main ethnic groups, there are approximately 400 tribal groups, found mainly in the north of the country. Twenty-two major languages and hundreds of dialects are spoken in India.

Portrait of an Afar woman, Ethiopia

The Afar people live in northern Ethiopia, within the vast Danakil Depression.
The beauty of Afar women is legendary—stunning and captivating; they wear sheer, colorful veils and bear distinctive facial scarification. Little is known about this semi-nomadic tribe and its origins. Some believe the Afar descend from Arabs who intermixed with a Caucasian group and migrated to Africa from the Arabian Peninsula, while others attribute an Egyptian origin to them. A nomadic pastoralist people inhabiting the so-called “Afar Triangle”—spanning Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti—they speak a language of Cushitic origin.
Social life is governed by a traditional, unwritten code overseen by a council comprising adult men from various allied clans.
